A completed Canadian film or television project represents successful applications to at least 3 institutional and/or private investors for 1st round development and 2nd round production financing. Each partner has its own multi-step content review process by adjudication committee. The textual content component of a single 1-hour documentary will typically require a 50-100 page story bible that contains: a Research Report, and Project Presentation, Scene-by Scene Shooting Script prior to securing production financing. The audiovisual content component of a 1-hour broadcast documentary requires a minimum shooting ratio of 50-1 hours of raw footage that is logged and assembled into 1 hour of finished content. A typical production timeline from investigate, script, first edit and final film is three years. The cinéma vérité format I prefer regularly triples and quadruples these ratios.

My primary research is extrapolated from a longitudinal practitioner inquiry grounded in the creative practices, processes and technologies of professional language artists and artisans. Since educational technology is an applied art and science the integrity of my theoretical samplings depends upon a stable output of projects for multiple client audiences with various collaborators at a consistent level of professional practice.

My Master’s research used a case-study approach of practitioner inquiry based on my 1998-2000 reflective practicum designing the pedagogy and producing the series of youth-directed films at the National Film Board.  Over the next 12-18 years, my professional portfolio increased to a sample size that permitted a longitudinal analysis using a mixed-methodology of grounded theory and practitioner inquiry for my Ph.D. research.

Now that the primary data set is stable and the substantive and formal grounded theories posited in my Ph.D. thesis I plan on publishing the results of the practical applications of my grounded theories.

Focus

When I worked primarily as a high school English Language Arts teacher my job was to teach the creative practices and processes of language arts output.

At the university level, I still teach the same fundamentals of creativity in addition to the theoretical framework and psychoeducational contexts of creative pedagogy.

My job as a producer is a pretty even split between business development, fiduciary responsibility, writing, content production, project management, technical direction, private and public presentations.

Professional Funding

My productions have and continue to receive funding from the following institutional programs. Due to this long-standing, renewed support I have been able to conduct the longitudinal practitioner inquiry into the professional creative practices and processes of filmic and mediatic language art, artists and artisans.

Funding of film and new media productions typically consists of first-round development and second-round production financing from at least three independent peer-reviewed processes for each round. A detailed schedule of amounts is available upon request.
